I have tried to upgrade Windows XP to Windows Vista Home Premium several times and the installation goes fine until it tries to boot it for the first time. I am not sure why it keeps reverting back to Windows XP. I even proceeded to do a clean install and it did not work. I have ran the compatability tester and it has no conflicts as stated previously I took everything off, the only thing on the computer is the drivers I had to update. Can someone please help me figure out what the problem is, I have been through all the troubleshooting guides and no go yet. Once it reverts back to WIndows XP it states that the installation could not be completed and it went back to Windows XP and to try again. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have a Dell Dimension 4550. I have a Dell Dimension 4550. Still holding onto a computer running Windows XP or Windows Vista? It may be time to upgrade to Windows 10. Firefox version 52 will be the last complete update for Windows XP and Windows Vista. Security updates will be released but no new features. Ok to add to this and to be more specific. Installation gets to 'completing upgrade' and when it reboots for the first time in this section it stops and tells me it could not complete the upgrade and it is restoring my previous version of windows. When my XP comes back up it tells me that it could not complete the upgrade to please go to and look for upgrade advisor and try again. I have used the upgrade advisor and it has only told me that my pci input device may have issues after upgrade and so will msn messenger and msn. I do not use msn so I was not concerned with these issues, but I do have an updated driver for my PCI Input on disk so I can install as soon as the upgrade takes place but I do not feel that the pci is causing the problem. The upgrade advisor tells me it is ok to go on with the upgrade so I do. When Vista runs the compatability check during installation it gives me the same list and tells me it is ok to proceed with upgrade. Do I maybe need to disable my pci input/sound card to get this to install correctly? Hi Amanda, Please understand that upgrading from Windows XP to Windows Vista will sometimes cause driver and incompatible third-party software issues. In the previous installation (Windows XP), many registry settings have been modified when installing third-party software. During an upgrade, these registry entries are retained, which can cause system issues after upgrading. Therefore, an upgrade install is only recommended for systems that have a simple and clean software environment. (A clean environment means a system with few third-party programs and un-signed hardware drivers installed.) In this case, I recommend trying a Clean Install of Windows Vista. (Before clean installing Windows Vista, please backup your important files) If you only have a Windows Vista Upgrade disk, you may need to perform an Upgrade Install of Windows Vista and let’s focus on this issue. The issue can be caused by incompatible software such as third-party burning and anti-virus programs or hardware devices. Please uninstall burning programs such as Nero and Roxio and all third-party anti-virus programs first. After that, please access the following site and run Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor to check if there is any incompatible product existing on your system. If so, please also remove them. Then let’s perform a Clean Boot before upgrading to Vista. This method will help us determine if this issue is caused by a loading program or service.
